What exactly is colonization?
Colonization is the process or act of setting up colonies in a place away from the mainland or home land.
Okay, but what is a colony?
A colony is an area of land that, even though it is away from its peoples' country of origin, remains under political control of the mainland. This can be full or partial control.
Why colonize?
Among the reasons for colonization is simply wanting to expand physically and politically. It was a race for power and it was a race of greed as well. As expensive as this type of travel was, it was the hope of those expanding that wherever they were settling colonies would provide them with an abundance of wealth.
What kind of wealth were they looking for?
The types of things people believed to be a source of material wealth that they could gain from colonizing included gold, silver, and other precious metals and even sources of food, opportunities for agriculture, and other materials such as those needed to build and maintain homes.
Didn't they encounter natives?
Of course they did!
How did they deal with these natives?
Different countries dealt with natives their people encountered in different ways. For instance, on the North American East Coast, the settlers were from Britain. The natives in this region eventually ended up being pushed off of their land, out of their homes, and onto reservations. In South and Central American lands were settled by the Spanish. In these areas, the natives were forced onto missions to live, learn, and work. All in all, encountered natives were treated poorly and were stripped of their homes and their ways of life.
What are the consequences?
Consequences of exploration and colonization include cultural mixing, disease spread, economic revolution, and the beginning of the Slave Trade, among other consequences. Watch the video below for a Crash Course on the Slave Trade.
